EASE Summer Institute

How can you use the arts to engage elementary school children with disabilities?

How can you effectively teach Core Curriculum to elementary students in motivating and exciting ways?

How can you enrich your own teaching and learning practice?

Explore these questions and learn hands-on arts activities that you can immediately integrate into your classroom — with no previous arts training required!

On July 15th to 19th 2013, teachers from across the country joined Everyday Arts For Special Education (EASE) in the Summer Institute, a five-day training (9:00 AM-5:00 PM, daily) exploring the multiple benefits of curriculum-integrated arts instruction for students with disabilities. They discovered the many ways in which basic music, movement, theater and visual arts activities can be used to enhance student learning.

Training focused on effective practice in multi-disciplinary, integrated arts instruction for children with disabilities, and was divided between hands-on arts activities and discussion. Regardless of previous arts training or experience, participants will leave the EASE Summer Institute with the knowledge, resources, and confidence required to begin implementing integrated arts activities in the classroom.

Exciting New Alliance for MNMP

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We have important news to share with you. Last week MNMP entered into a strategic alliance with Urban Arts Partnership, another innovative arts education organization. In the new structure, MNMP has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Urban Arts Partnership, allowing us to continue to deliver our Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE) program and other arts residencies more efficiently. As you know, MNMP has been a recipient of a number of research grants from the US Department of Education, the most recent and prestigious being a $4.6 million Investing In Innovation (i3) grant in collaboration with NYC’s special education school district 75 for EASE. Joining forces with Urban Arts Partnership helps to ensure that the experience and knowledge we’ve gained from these projects will continue to serve students and teachers for many years to come.

Philip Courtney, Urban Arts Partnership’s Executive Director, says: “This is a strategic expansion of Urban Arts Partnership into a compelling educational field. We are excited to expand our reach to have a broader impact on students with an even broader array of needs and goals. For fifteen years now Manhattan New Music Project has been leading the way in developing innovative strategies for working with students on the autism spectrum and a range of other cognitive and physical disabilities. The early results of the EASE program have been promising and I am excited to work with the MNMP staff on continuing to develop the program.”

Nancy Kleaver, Executive Director at MNMP added: “After meeting with a number of high quality organizations, it was clear that Urban Arts Partnership would be a great partner. UAP has a proven track record of moving struggling students towards academic success. As one of the most forward-thinking and well-established arts education providers in the city, I am confident that an alliance with UAP will strengthen our ability to deliver services to the kids who need them the most.”

MNMP is proud of having preserved founder Paul Nash’s legacy; supporting the creation and performance of new music since 1991. Thank you, composers, musicians, and performance artists who have been a part of the MNMP community. We hope you will stay engaged in MNMP’s educational mission moving forward, supporting the next generation of musicians and artists.

Both organizations are working on integrating their operations, and the MNMP staff will be moving into UAP’s headquarters by the end of this month. We look forward to keeping you posted. If you would like further information about the UAP-MNMP alliance, contact Nancy Kleaver at [email protected].

Until then, happy autumn!

    Upcoming Event

Listen Up! New Music for New Words

    December 2012

March 15-29 ONLY: Vote for Listen Up! in the GOOD Maker Music Challenge, and help us win $2,500 towards realizing this project!

MNMP is teaming up with New York Writers Coalition (NYWC) to commission and premiere — in concert and via podcast — 10 original pieces of music inspired by poetry and prose from NYWC’s free creative writing workshops for formerly voiceless New Yorkers of all ages.

Listen Up! will be more than just a concert of exciting, diverse new music. Through public creative exchange between professional musicians and members of communities with limited access to the arts — including at-risk youth, adults with disabilities, and the homeless — we aim to do nothing less than change perceptions about who can be a writer and whose voices are valuable in our society. Hearing their ideas presented through music will empower these writers to value their own stories, gain confidence as creators, and continue to develop self-knowledge and creative inspiration.

CLICK HERE to vote for Listen Up! in the GOOD Maker Music Challenge, and help us win $2,500 towards realizing this project! Your vote will allow MNMP and NYWC to secure a top-tier venue, compensate the artists, and produce a series of podcasts featuring live recordings and interviews with the writers.

    About New York Writers Coalition:
NY Writers Coalition Inc. (NYWC) provides free creative writing workshops throughout New York City for people from groups that have been historically deprived of voice in our society. Writing with others in an atmosphere of respect and acceptance, participants discover the value of their own stories, gain confidence and a stronger sense of self and become less isolated from themselves and from society. By creating a community of writers and leaders from diverse backgrounds, we galvanize the voices of the marginalized and create opportunities for all writers to connect with the larger community. NYWC’s goal is to create an inclusive city, one that is aware of the diversity of voices within it and honors the lives of all of its citizens.

Jazz legend Joe Zawinul was one of Austria’s most influential musicians & composers who developed his own musical language. For this concert, New York-based trumpeter Franz Hackl and his IDO Ensemble will take Zawinul’s compositions as a point of departure from which to develop their own new musical creations.

The high-caliber musicians performing this evening will explore the dynamic relationship between subtle chamber music passages, jazz improvisations, and pulsating hard hitting rock and world fusion rhythms. The Zawinul compositions which will be performed, will go beyond simple arrangements. They will incorporate fresh angles and expose new layers in the oeuvre of this very complex artist. In the spirit of Zawinul, improvisation will play a very important role in this event.

This concert is part of a new series presented by the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Manhattan New Music Project: “The Emancipation of Re:Sonance – Five Austrian Masters Revisited”, which focuses on five of Austria’s most famous composers and the re-interpretation, re-imagination, and re-arrangement of some of their greatest works. The title of the series plays on Arnold Schönberg’s concept of the “Emancipation of Dissonance”.

Peter Evans & The Wet Ink Ensemble | Ablinger

    January 31, 2012 @ 7:30 PM

    11 East 52nd Street
    New York, NY 10022

This concert will feature pieces both by and inspired by innovative Austrian composer Peter Ablinger. Trumpeter/composer Peter Evans will be joined by members of both the Wet Ink Ensemble and the Manhattan New Music Project in notated and improvised works which explore several specific compositions by Ablinger, as well as music which has shaped his compositional voice. The artists will perform Verkündigung (for tenor sax, piano and flute) and Voices and Piano, and in doing so contextualize them within a larger view of music’s potential as articulated through Ablinger’s work: a rediscovery of the listening experience itself and the explosion of potential in sound and noise.

Other events in the series will include performances by Fieldwork, Gene Pritsker and the International Street Cannibals, Sarah Weaver, and Franz Hackl.

    About the Artists:
Peter Evans holds a degree in classical trumpet from Oberlin Conservatory. Evans is a frequent solo performer, and also plays with chamber orchestras, as well as free improvised settings, with a focus on electro-acoustic music, jazz and composition. He leads several groups, is a member of the International Contemporary Music Ensemble and Mostly Other People do the Killing, and collaborates with a wide variety of creative musicians in the US and Europe.

Founded in 1998, Wet Ink has presented over 80 concerts featuring a wide range of artists, both established and emerging. Now entering their 12th season, Wet Ink have a reputation for exceptionally committed performances and for programming that is consistently diverse, fresh, and exciting. Their repertoire ranges from scores of rigorous notational complexity to indeterminate and improvisational music, from the American experimental tradition to the contemporary European avant-garde, and from acoustic to amplified to electronic works and works for homemade instruments.

Peter Ablinger (b. 1959 in Austria) completed his studies in composition with Gösta Neuwirth and Roman Haubenstock-Ramati in Graz and Vienna. He has lived in Berlin since 1982, where he has initiated and conducted numerous festivals and concerts. In 1993 he was a visiting professor at the University of Music, Graz. Ablinger has been a been guest conductor with ‘Klangforum Wien’, ‘United Berlin’ and the ‘Insel Musik Ensemble’, and worked as a freelance musician since 1990.

Peter Ablinger is one of few artists today who uses noise without any kind of symbolism – not as a signifier for chaos, energy, entropy, disorder, or uproar; not for opposing something, or being disobedient or destructive. As in all these cases of music deliberately involving noise, noise is the case, but for Ablinger it is noise alone. Peter Ablinger has also come a long way in questioning the nature of sound, time, and space (the components usually thought central to music), and his findings have jeopardized and made dubious conventions usually thought irrefutable. These insights pertain to repetition and monotony, reduction and redundancy, density and entropy.

The Emancipation of Re:Sonance – Five Austrian Masters Revisited

Sarah Weaver | Mahler’s Song of the Earth

    January 24, 2012 @ 7:30 PM

    Austrian Cultural Forum New York
    11 East 52nd Street
    New York, NY 10022

Registration is now open for this event! Click here to reserve tickets.

New York-based composer and conductor Sarah Weaver will be presenting a double quartet multimedia piece influenced by Gustav Mahler’s seminal composition Song of the Earth (1909). Weaver will perform with a quartet of musicians from the Manhattan New Music Project in this concert dedicated to polyphony, heterophony, plurality, nodality, improvisation, and cultural diversity. She will stream environmental sound and video from geographically diverse places via the internet.

Other events in the series will include performances by Fieldwork, Gene Pritsker and the International Street Cannibals, Peter Evans and the Wet Ink Ensemble, and Franz Hackl.

    About the Artist:
Sarah Weaver traces her specialization in telematic music – live performance via the internet by musicians in different geographic locations – back to a period in instrumentation when pieces were written for multiple localized orchestras by composers such as Ives, Stockhausen, and Braxton. While Mahler worked with Chinese poetry by Li Bai for the Song of the Earth, today artists from different countries can perform together live on the internet for artistic and social purposes, and live interaction is taking place on an increasingly global scale. Concerts take place over high-bandwidth internet with specialized telematic audio and video technology to achieve real-time and “real-space” performance. As a composer and conductor in telematic music she explores the inherent artistic properties of the medium within her contemporary music works.

The Emancipation of Re:Sonance – Five Austrian Masters Revisited

Fieldwork | In the Presence of Schönberg

    January 10, 2012 @ 7:30 PM

For this evening’s concert, Fieldwork will present a program of original compositions which reference the spirit of Arnold Schönberg’s music from a variety of perspectives. Many of tonight’s works privilege creative agency and expression above all else and may bear a passing resemblance to the emotional tenor of pieces like Erwartung and Pierrot Lunaire. Other compositions explore the relationship between repetitive rhythmic cells and highly chromatic pitch content. And in that sense, they can be viewed as part of a musical discourse which includes Schoenberg’s 3rd String Quartet (Op. 30) and the second movement of his Op. 11 for piano.

Other events in the series will include performances by Sarah Weaver, Gene Pritsker and the International Street Cannibals, Peter Evans and the Wet Ink Ensemble, and Franz Hackl.

    About the Artists:
Fieldwork is a collective of three widely celebrated young composer-performers: pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonist Steve Lehman (formerly Aaron Stewart), and drummer Tyshawn Sorey (formerly Elliot Humberto Kavee). Fieldwork’s music reflects each member’s ties to the American jazz tradition, modern composition, African and South Asian music, underground hip-hop and electronica, and the influential music of Chicago’s A.A.C.M.

Fieldwork’s intensely collaborative rehearsal process resembles that of a rock band: they use group improvisation to develop and expand their intricate compositions into something larger than the sum of its parts. The result is a dense yet visceral musical world — tightly unified ensemble playing, extroverted and high-impact, but with a mysterious inner logic. Fieldwork’s third album, Door, was released in spring 2008 on Pi Recordings to critical acclaim. Over the last 5 years, they have performed numerous U.S. dates, and overseas in Italy, Portugal, Austria, France and Sweden.

From January 3 to February 14, 2012, Manhattan New Music Project and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York will present a series of five concerts titled “The Emancipation of Re:Sonance – Five Austrian Masters Revisited”. The series will focus on five of Austria’s most famous composers and the re-interpretation of some of their greatest works by ensembles from Austria and the United States.

Click on any of the dates below for more information about that evening’s program.

Each concert’s featured artists will be joined onstage by members of the Manhattan New Music Project Ensemble, including David Taylor, John Clark, Franz Hackl, Bruce Williamson, and Wayne Escoffery. This project was co-curated by David Taylor and Andreas Stadler.

The title of this new series is a nod to Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg. The “Emancipation of Dissonance” was an idea put forth by Schönberg, which expanded on his negation of harmonic priorities, and the resulting denial of distinctions between the harmonic and nonharmonic. The idea of emancipating compositions from their originally intended frameworks, and re-imagining, re-arranging, and re-interpreting them in order to, finally, re-discover them, lies at the core of this concert series.

How do you enrich your own teaching and learning practice? Explore these questions and learn hands-on arts activities that you can immediately integrate into a child’s life — with no previous arts training required!

Join teachers, administrators, parents, therapists, and teaching artists for Reach Them to Teach Them: Autism and the Arts, a one-day forum exploring the multiple benefits of curriculum-integrated arts instruction for students on the autism spectrum. Discover the many ways in which basic music, movement, theater and the visual arts can be used to enhance student learning in school and at home.

Forum participants will divide their day between hands-on arts activities and discussion, all of which will be focused on effective practice in multi-disciplinary, integrated arts instruction for children on the autism spectrum. Regardless of previous experience level with the arts, participants will leave the forum with knowledge of arts activities they can confidently implement at home or in the classroom.

Reach Them to Teach Them: Autism and the Arts is a joint presentation of New York City’s Special Education District, District 75, and leading arts education organization, Manhattan New Music Project. Since 2002, Manhattan New Music Project and District 75 have collaborated in developing and implementing arts-based educational programs for students with autism. Their methodologies have been researched extensively by third-party evaluators, and been proven effective in increasing students’ communication and socialization skills, classroom behavior, and academic learning.

The League of Composers returns to Miller Theater on June 18 with host John Schaefer (WNYC) for its season finale concert featuring the Orchestra of the League of Composers. Conducted by Louis Karchin and featuring soloists Fred Sherry and Virgil Blackwell and three newly-commissioned works by Missy Mazzoli, Arthur Krieger, and David Rakowski, the evening’s program will also include the American premieres of new compositions by Elliot Carter and Shulamit Ran. This concert is presented with the assistance of Manhattan New Music Project.

    Program includes:

Sound Merger (2011) – Arthur Krieger
Talking Points (Right Wing Echo Chamber) (2011) – David Rakowski
Concertino for Bass Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra (written in 2008 at the age of 100) – Elliot Carter
Silent Voices (2010) – Shulamit Ran

    About League of Composers/ISCM:
The Orchestra of the League of Composers represents an expansion of the Chamber Players of the League-ISCM, a group organized in 1983 to present concerts each year at Merkin and Weill Recital Halls. Championing works by such established figures in American music as John Adams, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, Marion Gideon, John Harbison, Steve Reich and Joan Tower; masters of the early 20th century such as Bartok, Stravinsky and Schoenberg; as well as emerging composers; the ensemble quickly established a reputation for skilled performances of demanding literature. The June 10, 2009 Miller Theatre debut of the orchestra, hosted by WNYC’s John Schaefer, paid homage to an important venue for the League-ISCM throughout its 86 year history.

This performance is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

“Some of the most hauntingly beautiful and spiritually profound chamber music of the last decade”
    — All About Jazz on Clogs

The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, heralded as “a polished ensemble of miniature professionals” (New York Times), joins the legendary chamber/rock quartet, Clogs for an evening of new works by Bryce Dessner (The National) and Padma Newsome for chorus, for Clogs and for the two groups together.

New work by Bryce Dessner commissioned by St Ann’s Warehouse, Kaufman Center, and Manhattan New Music Project. New work by Padma Newsome commissioned by Kaufman Center and Manhattan New Music Project.

Search & Restore and Manhattan New Music Project (MNMP) are proud to co-present a four-night residency with the Grammy-nominated ensemble Kneebody. Each night will consist of two sets featuring special guests: guitarist Wayne Krantz, indie-rapper Busdriver, drummer Mark Guiliana, and experimental music producer Daedelus.

Founded in 2001, Kneebody has built upon an impressive array of individual resumes and conservatory training to create a truly singular voice within the instrumental world. The group released an album of works by Charles Ives in 2009 last year, which received a Grammy nomination in the crossover field. During the four-night run, Kneebody will perform from their follow-up 2010 release You Can Have Your Moment (Winter & Winter).

Described by The New York Times as “a resolutely unpin-downable band,” the L.A./Brooklyn based quintet can be measured as “a band that inhabits the borderland abutted by post-bop, indie-rock, and hip-hop, without seeming to give much thought to the borders.” All About Jazz references their dynamic scope of “M-Base funk, post-rock futurism, Sabbath-inspired thrash, bittersweet pop and chamber-esque introspection,” while trumpet player Shane Endsley affirms he “[tries] to avoid stylistic references” and that the group “has had many labels thrown at it, but none seem to fit.” Whatever the case may be, come experience first hand how this ensemble is able to brilliantly tear through several genres to create a singular sonic tapestry.

This performance is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Manhattan New Music Project celebrates its 20th anniversary with a commission for Darcy James Argue and his 18-piece steampunk big band Secret Society — along with performances by Claire Chase of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and MNMP founding member David Taylor.

Praising Darcy James Argue for his talents as a bandleader and composer, the New York Times recently called his work “…a wickedly intelligent dispatch from the fading border between orchestral jazz and post-rock and classical minimalism.” Darcy will debut a world premiere commissioned in honor of MNMP’s late founder and artistic director, Paul Nash. Darcy will also present pieces from his recent album, Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records) performed by his 18-piece big band, Secret Society. Infernal Machines was one of the most talked about jazz albums of 2009, featured on over 70 year-end “best” lists, including NPR, Wall Street Journal, and Village Voice.

ICE co-founder Claire Chase will perform Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint for solo flute and tape. Declared “dynamic” and “indefatigable” by Time Out New York, Claire is a passionate leader and innovator in 21st century music who has produced events both in the world’s most important concert halls, and in warehouses, galleries and clubs. Claire co-founded the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2001, and the New Yorker has described them as “a powerhouse of new-music programming on a Chicago-New York axis…brilliant and unexpected.”

David Taylor, described by the New York Times as “a bass trombonist with a marvelously dark cavernous sound and an attack that is as vividly dramatic as it is virtuosic,” was a founding member of Manhattan New Music Project in 1990. He has appeared as a soloist throughout the world, and recorded with Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Wynton Marsalis among many others. He will perform works by MNMP founder Paul Nash with surprise guests.

    Blank Page to Stage

    (2008-12)

    » Participating teachers log-in here

Funded by an Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Blank Page to Stage (BPS) is a four-year partnership between Manhattan New Music Project and P.S. 24K, a dual-language school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The program serves approximately 850 students in grades K-5. This population includes English language learners, special-needs students, and general education students.

BPS will train all of P.S. 24K’s teachers to integrate arts activities into their classrooms and core curricula. Students will start, quite literally, with a blank page, and will go on to create their own original musical theater production.

Throughout this process, students will actively participate in five core arts disciplines: drama, music, dance, creative writing and visual arts. They will write and perform a script, compose and choreograph original music, and design and build their own costumes and sets. Teachers will, through professional development and extensive in-class support, learn to shepherd their students through this dynamic process.

Program evaluation is directed by Dr. Rob Horowitz, Associate Director of the Center for Arts Education Research at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Urban Arts Partnership and District 75, New York’s special education district, have received an Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) award from the U.S. Department of Education.

The $4.6 million grant, combined with a $500,000 contribution from National Philanthropic Trust, will fund a five-year project developing arts programs for special education students.

Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE) is a professional development program designed to improve student achievement in the areas of communication, socialization, academic learning, and arts proficiency through integrated, arts-based approaches.

Through a series of training workshops and extensive in-school support, participating teachers in ten treatment schools will learn skills and strategies across multiple arts disciplines (music, dance, visual arts, and theater) in order to integrate the arts into their classroom instruction. In addition, we will broaden the reach of the project beyond these schools by offering EASE training to other teachers within District 75 through its District-wide professional development program, to special education teachers and college students through Summer Seminar workshops, and to special education administrators nationwide through Administrators’ Workshops. Through treatment schools and other training efforts, EASE will serve 40,795 students.

The project will be evaluated by Dr. Rob Horowitz, Associate Director of the Center for Arts Education Research at Teachers College, Columbia University.

New Amsterdam Records and Manhattan New Music Project are proud to co-present a double-feature performance of the music of composers Missy Mazzoli and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The concert will take place at Galapagos Art Space on October 5 and will feature members of ACME, Janus trio, MIVOS Quartet and MaNi. The music, which will be performed by varying-sized combinations of brass, strings, woodwinds, percussion, and female vocals, will feature three New York City premieres, including Snider’s “Shiner” and “The Reserved, The Reticent” – a solo cello piece to be performed by Clarice Jensen of ACME – as well as Mazzoli’s “Death Valley Junction” – a string quartet to be performed by the MIVOS Quartet.

Snider and Mazzoli have already proven themselves luminaries of the New York music scene and beyond. Mazzoli, hailed as one of the “most consistently inventive and surprising composers now working in New York” by the New York Times, has garnered attention as bandleader of the electro-chamber outfit Victoire as well as for her chamber compositions, which have been performed by the Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Snider, also a composer of ambitious and ethereal chamber music, has been noted to possess “an enviable knack for crafting moody, strikingly beautiful works” (Time Out New York). Her latest work, Penelope, is an hourlong, epic song cycle written for vocalist Shara Worden of indie band My Brightest Diamond and chamber orchestra Signal. With Mazzoli releasing a full-length Victoire album in September and Snider releasing a studio recording of Penelope in October, the concert will present a collection of recent chamber works from neither album which promise to further reveal the breadth of these composers’ formidable abilities.

Of her compositions, Mazzoli says, “like most of my music, these pieces are really about transporting the listener to a dreamy and unfamiliar but very specific place.” Snider’s pieces inhabit a similar realm of lush but uneasy beauty, a world she perfected in her large-scale opus Penelope. But unlike the latter work, these shorter pieces are more “classically inspired” in nature, containing fewer of the pop music and songwriting references evident in much of her latest work.

This performance program is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

    Investing In Innovation (i3)

MNMP and District 75 Awarded $4.6 Million Federal Innovation Grant; Receive $500,000 from National Philanthropic Trust

MNMP and District 75, New York’s special education district, have been selected to receive an Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) award from the U.S. Department of Education.

The $4.6 million grant, combined with a $500,000 contribution from National Philanthropic Trust, will fund a five-year project developing arts programs for special education students. Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE) is a professional development program designed to improve student achievement in the areas of communication, socialization, academic learning and arts proficiency. Through treatment schools and other training efforts, EASE will serve 40,795 students. Dr. Rob Horowitz, Associate Director of the Center for Arts Education Research at Teachers College, Columbia University, will direct the project evaluation.

Our proposal ranked 4th highest out of 49 winning applicants from among 1,700 nationwide (only three of which were for the arts). In order to receive the award, we needed to secure 20% — or $929,000 – in matching commitments from the private sector by September 8, 2010.

We are truly and incredibly grateful for the generous support of the National Philanthropic Trust for the J.P. Morgan Charitable Giving Fund, which at the recommendation of the Education Collaboration Fund (ECF), has committed $500,000 to the project. ECF supporters include the Dalio Family Foundation, Judy and Jamie Dimon, the Finnegan Family Foundation, the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, the TOSA Foundation, and other anonymous donors. MNMP’s board voted unanimously to commit to raising the remaining $429,000 over five years.

Special thanks goes to the EASE program design team: Teaching Artist and Curriculum Designer Dr. Jennifer Raine, District 75 Arts Instructional Support Specialist Kathy London, and Evaluator Dr. Rob Horowitz. Mike Halverson, MNMP’s Director of Education, will oversee the project.

    John Schaefer
of WNYC hosts the League’s season finale featuring the Orchestra of the League of Composers, conducted by Lou Karchin, on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Miller Theatre (8:00 PM). Mr. Schaefer interviews the evening’s composers, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, D.J. Sparr, Joan Tower, and Jason Treuting, thoughout the concert.

On the program will be Babbitt’s Transfigured Notes (NY Premiere), Carter’s On Conversing With Paradise (NY Premiere – composed at age 99!), Tower’s Purple Rhapsody (NY Premiere), the League’s 2009 competition winning piece by D.J. Sparr, DACCA:DECCA:GaFfa,and Treuting’s oblique music for 4 plus (blank) (World Premiere and League commission with So Percussion and the League orchestra). The concert is presented with the assistance of Manhattan New Music Project.

The Orchestra of the League of Composers represents an expansion of the Chamber Players of the League-ISCM, a group organized in 1983 to present concerts each year at Merkin and Weill Recital Halls. Championing works by such established figures in American music as John Adams, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, Marion Gideon, John Harbison, Steve Reich and Joan Tower, masters of the early 20th century, such as Bartok, Stravinsky and Schoenberg, as well as emerging composers, the ensemble quickly established a reputation for skilled performances of demanding literature. The debut of the orchestra, hosted by WNYC’s John Schaefer, was on June 10, 2009, at Miller Theatre, paying homage to an important venue for the League-ISCM throughout its 85 year history.

This performance is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

    Special Education

Through five multi-year grants from the U.S. Department of Education (three in partnership with District 75), MNMP has created educational models for students with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders. We recognize that the arts provide a unique entry point for learning; this can be particularly effective for students with special needs, who may struggle with more conventional academic strategies.

Learn about our current and past research initiatives with District 75:

» Communication and Socialization Through the Arts (CASTA) , a three-year professional development program designed to address communication and socialization skills of students with autism through arts-based approaches (Professional Development for Arts Educators grant, 2008-11)

» Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE), a five-year program expanding the approaches piloted in CASTA to serve the needs of students with a wide range of disabilities (Investing in Innovation grant, 2010-15)

    Strategic Foundation Building Retreat

    MS 325X, Urban Science Academy

    April 21st, 2010 @ DreamYard Art Center

Thanks to the generous support of a Technical Assistance Program grant through Partners for Arts Education, Manhattan New Music Project coordinated a day-long “Strategic Foundation Building” retreat for partnership planning, curriculum design, and community-building with partner school MS 325X, Urban Science Academy. In addition to school faculty and staff and representatives of MNMP, the retreat brought together representatives of American Ballroom Theater, Dreamyard Project, Lincoln Center Theater, the New School and Studio in a School — all arts-provider partners of 325X — to explore connections across the school’s culture and collectively help teachers, principal Patrick Kelly, and assistant principal Marcos DeCastro develop a long range vision for arts in the school.

With the facilitation of Hollis Headrick, a nationally recognized consultant for arts, education and philanthropy, the team discussed their common available resources and explored the potential advantages of linking all their partnership programs to better address NY State and NYC arts standards. In a lively exchange, the arts partners shared their programs and ideas to develop a comprehensive approach to arts learning.

Several recommendations were made to pursue this goal. They included:

    * Regular meetings for further planning and coordination of arts efforts;
    * Sharing the Urban Science Academy’s arts programming with the larger school community through shows and exhibitions;
    * Exploring the possibility of creating a school-wide carnival around themes drawn from the Social Studies;
    * Articulating a set of core values, skills, and attitudes common to all the arts programs to reinforce learning across the partnerships;
    * Inviting student input into an arts plan and encouraging students to create their own mission statement concerning what they want from their arts learning at the school.

    Still Sounds Run Deep

    Monday, June 21, 2010 at 12:00pm

Apple Store Chelsea Pedestrian Oasis – 14th Street & 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10014

    Subway: A,C,E,L to 14th Street

As part of Interactive Music New York, Manhattan New Music Project presents Still Sounds Run Deep, a site-specific, sonic event.

Composed by Paul Nash and performed under the musical direction of Art Baron, Still Sounds Run Deep occupies a special place in our institutional history and Nash’s compositional output.

It is one of Nash’s most performed works. Inspired by his experience with site specific sculpture program at the Djerassi Foundation in California, it was originally written in 1997; in 2000, he revised it and received funding from the Jerome Foundation in 2000 to produce the work in nine city parks, from Fort Tryon to City Hall in partnership with the Department of Parks. The piece was performed for a number of years hence, including in Herald’s Square in 2005 in memorial for Nash, who met an untimely death as the result of a brain tumor.

Still Sounds Run Deep is described as a sonic event because it is not intended for a formal concert setting; it is more in the nature of a happening; musicians play outdoors in the urban environment interacting with sounds that they hear in that soundscape: sirens, traffic, people, nature. Working from a score with graphic notation, some musical ideas are fixed and time is measured carefully by means of synchronized stop-watches. Musicians stop and listen to the environment for one minute intervals. Wild card rule to react musically to extraordinary sound events (such as the passing of fire engines). The piece is an hour in length and will be performed by 10 players:

Art Baron – musical director & conductor
Jane Ira Bloom – soprano sax
    Briggan Kraus – alto sax
    Erik Lawrence – tenor sax
    Jack Walrath – trumpet
    Steven Bernstein – trumpet
    Curtis Fowlkes – trombone
    Vincent Chancey – French Horn
    Marcus Rojas – tuba
    Lou Grassi – drums

    Interactive Music New York
This performance is part of Interactive Music New York (IAMNY), a unique program of interactive music performance and outdoor installations as part of the fourth annual Make Music New York. IAMNY will unfold as a walking tour of public sites arranged along a designed area of Manhattan. At each location, musicians and their instruments will present original compositions that interact with the audience, the immediate environment, or with various forms of technology to deliver a dynamic and spontaneous musical experience. Interactive music demonstrations will also be conducted during the program.

This performance program is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

    Friday, May14th & Saturday May 15th 2010 at 10:30pm 45 Bleecker

45 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10012

    Subway: B,D,F,V to Broadway-Lafayette 6 to Bleecker

Manhattan New Music Project (MNMP) and Search & Restore present a two-night, double bill performance by jazz composer-artists Darcy James Argue and Todd Sickafoose at 45 Bleecker on May 14th and 15th, 10:30pm

10:30pm: Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors Bassist and composer Todd Sickafoose, a native of the Bay Area, has become an integral member of the New York City jazz scene, as both a leader and sideman. Credited for his proficiency across genres, Sickafoose has collaborated with the likes of Ani DiFranco, Don Byron, Andrew Bird, Trey Anastasio, Nels Cline, Tony Furtado, and many others. Sickafoose will be performing music from his latest album, Tiny Resistors (Cryptogramophone), which the New York Times has stated “features a number of tunes in which horn parts and guitar lines swirl around a calmly asymmetrical pulse.” John Ellis (sax/clarinet), Alan Ferber (trombone), Jonathan Goldberger (guitar), Mike Gamble (guitar), and Rudy Royston (drums) will accompany him for this performance.

11:30pm: Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society Praising Darcy James Argue for his talents as a bandleader and composer, the New York Times recently called his work “a wickedly intelligent dispatch from the fading border between orchestral jazz and post-rock and classical minimalism… radiates self-assurance, and an almost chilling steadiness of conviction.” Argue will be performing works with his 18-piece big band, Secret Society, from his debut album, Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records). This release was one of the most talked about jazz albums of 2009, and was featured on over 70 best-of-the-year lists, including New York Times, NPR, Wall Street Journal, and Village Voice.

About Search & Restore: Search & Restore is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustaining, expanding and exploding the live jazz audience in New York City among younger and bigger audiences. Through creative concert presentation and SearchAndRestore.com, the best resource for live jazz in New York City, Search & Restore aims to unite a community around forward thinking jazz and is determined to shatter the pretense that an audience needs to understand the music before they hear it. Rather, Search & Restore feels that jazz being made today is some of the most human music ever made, and will bring these incredible melodies and improvised insanities to as many people as possible. Don’t try and stop them. http://searchandrestore.com

This performance is made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
